Bariatric Surgery: Surgical Treatment of Severe Obesity!!

Obesity can be treated by two types of methods: surgical and non-surgical methods.

Non-surgical Methods: It includes diet programs, exercises, synthetic or herbal pills etc

Surgical Methods: It includes Bariatric surgery which is recommended to those people who suffer from morbid obesity i.e. a person with BMI above 40 or a person with BMI between 35-40 and having health problems like type 2 diabetes, heart diseases. Bariatric surgery enables an individual to lose weight by operating his or her stomach or intestine.

Morever Bariatric surgery is mainly of two types: adjustable gastric banding and gastric bypass.

Adjustable gastric banding: - In this technique, surgeon restricts the amount of food eaten by the individual by inserting a band which controls the size of the opening from the esophagus to the stomach.

A surgeon can control the size of the opening by inflating and deflating the band through a port which is implanted beneath the abdomen skin. However this band can be removed at any time.

Gastric bypass: - In this type of weight loss surgery, there involves a permanent reduction in the size of the stomach. It is also called as roux-en-Y gastric bypass. In gastric bypass surgery, surgeon create an egg-sized pouch by utilizing proximal portion of the stomach and connects it to the intestine in a location that bypasses about 2 feet of normal intestine. The main reason behind creating an egg-sized pouch is that it can control the amount of food that can be eaten by an individual.
